The day you don’t get time to meditate do this: two to three times a day, pause, take an inhale, then a long exhale and bring your mind to the present moment. Become aware of your body and senses. What do you see around you? What do you smell? What sounds do you hear? You are fully alive to the present moment! When you are Here and Now your awareness is one with you. With practice you learn to be with your inner Awareness. When you bask in the self-recognition of your aware self you feel the warmth of loving-kindness and peace.

Present moment has two levels: the immediate one, the one we are familiar with. A bundle of our experiences—past and future in which we are constantly entangled. At this level we are not truly alive. However, when we pause, when we focus on the breath for a few moments we are able to go beyond the noise of mental experiences. With practice, this allows us to experience awareness also called spaciousness. This second level is beyond thought.

In this spaciousness, (let me put this in the first-person point of view) I discover “I” am witnessing myself. “I” Awareness is watching me, as it always does. But this time you are conscious of it. What is that who is aware of your egoic self? Who is behind your floating thoughts and fleeting emotions? Pure Awareness! Spacious and empty of thoughts! It is same as the Universal Intelligence—the divinity within and without.

When you mind is clear of the noise it has empty space, simple awareness. The essential nature of that is peace, contentment and joy. But you are unaware of it because it is hidden behind the contents of your stories, your experiences. When you meditate, when you journal, when we sit in silence and stop identifying with past or future you remove the veil obscuring this emptiness. And awareness is revealed.

Who are you? Not the contents of your mind but its spaciousness, devoid of past and future. You are your divine Awareness. “When I disentangle myself from the content of my experience, my true nature simply shines by itself, just as the blue sky is revealed when the clouds disperse.”

OOOOooooooo, Madhu! “hidden behind the contents of your stories…” So life-changing to even get glimpses behind the veil! The stories I’ve told myself about myself are not “truth.” Thank you for teaching me this!
