Death is inevitable then why am I here? For what purpose? What awaits me after death? Throughout our lives, behind all the business of growing old there is a mild restlessness. Yet, all are not fortunate to watch themselves grow old and enjoy the final decade or two of the final phases of our lives.

We slow down. We learn to spend time in silence and solitude. We meditate and journal to turn our deep desires inwards. And we discover that the source of meaning and fulfillment is right within us. We discover that we all have the same essence, the same awareness, the same Authentic Self deep in our consciousness.

One of the most important questions we ask is, what is my legacy? What would I leave behind? How may I contribute? A meaningful answer to this question would be, generously bestow whatever field you know best for the sheer pleasure of giving. As you give freely, let meditation and journaling take you on an inner journey and awaken you to who you truly are.

At first, our inward journey is entirely on the physical level: sensations, thoughts and feelings. We become fully conscious of them. Below this consciousness are the cobwebs of distractions. We deal with each distraction diligently in silence of meditation and in our writing practice. It takes years to descend deeper into the personal unconscious. Seems impossible to stay conscious in the unconscious. But that is precisely we need to do. That’s what we try to do in silent meditation: learning to be awake on a deeper level of consciousness. This is where wild animals from our past prowl. But we learn to tame them. Finally, the most challenging encounter we face is the obsessive thirst for our separate existence in the world.

We’re desperate to discover what lies, behind the distractions and wild prowling animals, in the depth of consciousness. It is a treasure house, “Jewel is in the lotus of the heart.” It takes years for its portal to open. When it does the barrier falls between the world without and the world within. We discover that all security and love is within. We feel immense joy. Joy of helping, giving and supporting.

In conclusion, I’d like to share one redeeming quality that death has. Without the knowledge of our own death, we may not seek deeper meaning. We may lead a shallow life. Earnest Becker said that death forces us to respond to life better. What do you think?

So many great nuggets in here that I will be copying to my journal. ‘… source of meaning and fulfillment is within us’ ‘thirst for our separate existence in this world’ ‘awaken on a deeper level of consciousness’ — yes to all of these! I agree, the knowledge and undeniable reality of death is urging a deeper meaning and awareness in this life.
